In an effort to reduce dependence on the billonaires, I’ve decided it is time for me to have my own “cloud” server. This is one of those projects I’ve never taken on and I am very excited to get started!
Let’s remind everyone that “The Cloud” is just a server that a company owns, rents or leases as a place to store your data for easy access. Just a server in a non descript building in the commercial area of town.
As I no longer want to have my data stored in a cloud outside of my control, and I need to seriously organize my data, as does my wife, so I decided it was time to bring that in house. The build has already started, and here’s where I’m at.
The Hardware
Starting off with the
, which is stunning to look at and touch. It’s all aluminum, feels solid. I can see how cable management is going to be tricky, but worth it. Holds a mini ITX board and 6 3.5″ SATA drives.
Turning to the inside, this will be powered by the
. Perfect specs for a NAS build, the Celeron processor has more than enough power for my needs. Attached is a single 256gb NVMe drive, I will be adding a 1tb before the build is complete.
All of this powered by a 500w PSU. No graphics card or anything crazy beyond drives. 500w will do the trick nicely.
All that remains is a 16gb stick of DDR5 RAM, which will cost more than the first 10TB drive that gets installed. And, of course, the software. For that, I have decided to go with
. It’s $60 and everything I read points to it being the right choice for the build of my use, which will be Nextcloud and Plex, probably.
Final build date is expected mid March.
