Mucking About on Db’s Site

So db solicited for contributors here on and then gave me permission to post.  However he never gave me any ground rules before he turned me loose…. That may have been a mistake on his part…

For now at least I’ll behave myself…

Actually a quick introduction, I’m Michael and db has had a link to my irregularly updated site in his sidebar for a few years now.  I met db through the MINI community (you’re stunned I’m sure) and have somehow managed to become a semi-regular host over on White Roof Radio.  According to the Personnel Directory here I’m also the Chief Plumber – again possibly not one of db’s better decisions.  Then again I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express on New Years Eve…

Elsewhere I’m the Chief Photographer and Behind the Scenes Person over at (a position I just made up) as well as producer and co-Presenter with Patricia of The Mail Buoy Podcast.  I’ve also got two Flickr streams that I post to, one for the Cruise Planners site and the other is my personal one that’s not cruise related.  If you look hard enough there’s also a few other places on the web you can find me.

Anyway, until I can come up with something interesting to post I’ll solicit some input from the audience.

What are your tech predictions for 2009?  Will there be chaos as the digital TV transition occurs in February?  Will Steve Jobs leave Apple this year?  Will Best Buy or Circuit City survive the year? What cool gadgets are coming this year?  Leave a comment and let me know what you think….

  1. Welcome Michael! Thanks for the intro.

Tech predictions? Apple is going to introduce the iPhone shuffle. And Steve Jobs will finally start eating meat on advice from his doctor.

  2. Hi Michael! I didn’t realize that you were… well, you, lol. You’ve been doing a great job over @ WRR btw. I actually “Made the list” as well and since I’ve been designated “Head Cook” I’ll just warn you now… don’t eat the soup 😉

    As for Tech predictions;
I predict that top-end graphics cards will remain out of my price range.

Stand alone Blu-Ray players will still struggle to compete with the PS3 (for at least the next year).
And the iPhone shuffle will be a BIG hit… until New Year’s 2010 when they all die inexplicably.

  3. Welcome mike! I’ve been enjoying listening to you over the years at wwr. Sounds like you have a good sense of humor (and a decent bowling game according to your twitter).

    Here are my tech predictions:
Apple will revamp the mac mini, macbook pro 17″, and introduce a smaller iphone at macworld. Also, Steve Jobs will step down this year meaning I’ll have to dump what few shares of AAPL I own ASAP.

I believe Blu Ray players will drop down to the $150 mark (big names, not memorex for God’s sake).

I think Best Buy will do quite well as people have little to no idea how marked up their inventory is. Circuit City will bite the dust. Blockbuster will become online only.

A leaked copy of Windows 7 will make it into the wild and people will realize that it is not their savior from Vista and it too will suck hard.

Thanks for starting us off Mike…I’ll try and post an intro by this evening!

  4. I thought Windows 7 was already leaked? There was an article on Slashdot about it the other day, so it must have happened a while ago (“You know what I like about Slashdot? If a big news story happened two days ago, and I forgot about it, Slashdot posts about it two days later to remind me”)

Predicting Mac Mini and iMac revisions, new iWork and iLife possibly, but not a huge chance, and predicting that whatever gets announced, DB will get annoyed with us talking about it a whole bunch on Twitter.

Predicting that I will continue going to Best Buy over Circuit City, even though Best Buy is four miles away and Circuit City I can quite literally see from my apartment window. This will not bode well for them.

And just to round ’em all up, this year we’ll see the Mac Tablet, the iPhone Shuffle, the Zune Phone, the Loch Ness monster, and 2009 will be the year of Linux.

  5. Circuit City… (insert polite term for “Sucks” here)
When I was living in Huntsville I received an online customer survey from them and called it the “Wal-Mart” of electronics stores.
