Back without Fireball this week, who is out on assignment!

Kicking things off with the news that Loki, season 2, is coming back to Disney+ on October 6th.

We are super excited for this one!

Cool car movies this week go to: Baby Driver, especially the opening scene, and 6 Underground. Both of these are worth checking out!

More cool cars, this time in the shape of a GMC Typhoon that is living in my neighborhood. Full details behind that link. Back in the early 90’s, this car was coveted by many, including me.

We aren’t a tech show, but found a great app to complement your movie/tv watching; Callsheet.

Callsheet, in short, allows you to look up movies, TV shows, cast, and crew. You can think of it as similar to the IMDb app but… with respect for its users. Which, actually, makes it not like IMDb at all. ?

Click over for the details and to download from the app store. It is IOS only.

This week’s Featured Fireball Mug (say that 5 times fast!) is the Munster Koach. So cool! Go check it, or any of the 100+ mugs Fireball has designed to make you coffee time better!

To finish us off, there is a new episode of the Ride Bikes Radio ready to listen to, featuring the return of Brian Dallas. If you ride bikes, you might dig this one.

Tim returns soon, and with him a a brand new episode of The Hollywood Car Show! Stay tuned!

RBR: Faster than OJ through an Airport

Ride Bikes Radio is back! Since it has been a minute, we catch up. Then, straight into Brian’s plans for the next 12+ months of riding to celebrate the anniversary of his birth in 2024. Let’s just say he has a lot of miles and feet of elevation planned, and we get to join him on his journey getting ready. Speaking of, here is a copy of his Retul report.

Comments are open and we are looking for feedback on pretty much everything! You can also email that feedback in to feedback at rbr and we’ll get it.

We talked about the emergency SOS feature on iPhone getting used in Maui, and the absolutely georgous Specialized S-Works Tarmac sl8.

Oh yea, and this

.

Finally, the latest show under the White Roof is The Hollywood Car Show featuring Fireball Tim. It’s a really great show and we think there are a few of you that might dig it!

Nerd Time: 2012 Mac Mini Updated

Mac Mini About this Mac screen

What a workhorse! I’ve had this Mac Mini since 2012. 16GB of RAM, 2.3 Core I7 processor. Not a screaming fast machine by any means, but still completely serviceable, depending on the need. It is a computer that I have stopped using due to age and performance. Due to this, I have upgraded. Still, this is a functioning computer and it seems a waste to not use it. So, nerd me went to work!

(Insert A-Team theme playing video montage here)

Back in my working-for-computer-makers days, I did some side work for a guy spamming fax machines with ads for tape drive repair. Well, not really spam, more of a blast to existing customers. Anyway, I was tasked with this project using only what was available to me at the time. The computer was maybe a pentium-class processor? Running Windows 95 I think (when Pentium II were available on Windows 2000). There was no budget beyond my pay, so I had to make it work. Doing this really taught me how to get shit done with or without resources/budget. This is a skill I used at every IT manager job and continue to use today!

The Mac Mini is still functional, but pretty slow and running MacOS Catalina (10.15). I had to stop using it for podcasting and voice over work because it had gotten so slow. Even after I did a fresh installation of the OS, it was still to sluggish to be useful, hence my upgrade to an 15″ M2 Macbook Air.

Still in need of a computer for other things, I went ahead and starting researching upgrading the Mini, using OpenCore Legacy Patcher and the best version for that old computer. I found quite a few people saying that Mac OS Big Sur (11.7) runs great and started working towards that.

Then I was talking to Brian at Ride Bikes Radio who just loaded Mac OS Ventura (13.5) on an equally old Mac Book Pro and reported it was running great. So, I did that instead! And holy cats, it IS great!

Typically, puttting a newer version of an operating system on old systems, at least on PCs, doesn’t always work that great. Hardware issues, processor issues, everything issues. Oh, and they are usually too slow to useable, as I recently discovered when I tried to revive an old Asus laptop with a SSD and Windows 10. Sure, it would boot and was functional, but the boot took about 5 minutes and every app took even longer to load.

That is not the case with the Mini. In fact, if anything, I’d say it is running better on newer OS. While there are a lot of things that it won’t do because the hardware doesnt’ support it, what it will do far outweighs those missing features.

Immediately after completing the installation, I put it to work! Starting with a photo project where I needed to work on 30GB of photos on an external (USB-A) drive. This guy didn’t even break a sweat, and I was doing all of the work over a wifi-connected VNC connection. Almost like I was working directly on the computer.

It’s nice to have this up and running and I am really looking forward to putting it to work!

Back in Production Mode

all_showsBannerSM

I realize I’ve been touching on this in pieces here and on the social medias, however I haven’t really said that I was full on back in podcast production mode.

Ahem.

I am full on back in podcast production mode!

And what podcasts am I currently producing?

The Hollywood Car Show with world famous movie designer Fireball Tim (yes, that is really his name)(yes, REALLY!) and we talk about movies, cars, cars in movies and car events, with insider stories by Fireball! I always enjoyed this show, and this is our thrid season of being at it! Click that link for all of the subscribe options.

Ride Bikes Radio with Brian Dallas is back! This is the show about riding bikes and having fun on bikes! Brian has some huge goals for the next year and we will be tracking his progress, plus talking about riding bikes! Same here, link takes you to a handy subscribe page.

White Roof Radio with Todd Pearson, Gabe Bridger and Chad Miller is now 18 years old, with our 691st regular episode going live last week. This is all MINI Cooper stuff, all the time. We also record the pre-show for this one and it’s available, free of charge, at blackroofradio.com! Fancy link for this one is coming soon!

DonBurnside.com podcast also needs a fancy link. With this and White Roof Radio, I’m still working on the final bits moving the audio to a new host. Once that is done, I’m going to start doing regular episodes.

The Hollywood Car Show 4: The George Barris Interview

Way back in 2008, Fireball and I spent the day be bopping around Hollywood. We had a VIP tour of the Warner Brothers lot, which is super great. What was even super greater is we got the chance to interview George Barris! In his shop! This is that interview.

db and Fireball will return NEXT WEEK with a brand new episode. In the meantime, click over to the Fireball Etsy shop and get yourself mug. Can I recommend for this week the Mach 5 Mug . I can hear the theme song already!
