Where do I start?

Posted in Observations,Rants, technology — by Don on 04/16/07

Yea, so no Sunday Post. I’m really sorry about that. I did spend all day trouble shooting the MB. You’ve seen the comments already, so you know it’s a bad logic board. Is that applespeak for motherboard? Just curious? Also, can someone please answer for me what the big deal about RAM is on a Mac? You see, with a PC, you buy the RAM, you install the RAM. If you don’t get any error beeps (8 I believe), then everything is usually good to go.

But not so on the Mac eh? Everywhere I read, the first troubleshooting tip always asks if you have put in 3rd party RAM. What? Don’t y’all know that the Mac has 3rd party RAM in it from the factory?

Ok, I’ll let it go. Needless to say, the Mac will be in a box tomorrow on it’s way to the repair shop.

Then, there was last week. Not just part of last week, but ALL of last week. I could say it was the week from hell, but that would be pretty tame. Oh yes, it was much worse than that. Let’s see, this would be a good time for a jump followed by a list. Here we gooooo!

  • I was yelled at by one of the girls in the office
  • …and called a liar
  • Accussed of in-fighting
  • Blamed for a new copy machine not working correctly
  • Blamed for crappy software not working correctly
  • Had 3 MAJOR hardware failures
  • Had to reschedule 2 side jobs

And that was all before Wednesday!

Yes, it was a crappy week. If you were one that I pissed off last week because I was uber cranky, please accept my apologies.

But now we are on a new week. I’m 2 weeks behind on just about everything else because of last week, but I’m catching up.

I might be able to tell you next week why I need a passport. Maybe.

Ok, I thought there was more, but I must have already purged it. Check back next time for even more fun!

Yeah Logic Board = MoBo. Not sure why they decided to go with a different name. From Wikipedia:

A logic board is the Apple Macintosh equivalent of a motherboard. The term “logic board” was coined back in the Eighties, when the compact Macs at the time had two separate circuit boards, the Logic Board, containing all of the computer’s “logic” circuitry (processor, RAM, etc.), and the analog board, containing all of the hardware necessary to drive the built-in display and to power the rest of the computer’s components. The term “logic board” stuck over the years of Macintosh manufacturing, even in the non-all-in-one Macs.

db: “I’m 2 weeks behind on just about everything else because of last week, but I’m catching up.”

Just wondering…how does one become 2 weeks behind because of 1 bad week? That’s not one of your neatest tricks db. ;)

  • db

no, but I am the master of exageration ;)

hey db- that does sound like an uber-crappy week. As for the macbook, what can I say? At least it’s still covered under warranty…Maybe they’ll send you a new one?

Who yells at people in offices anymore? That’s so cliche’. Best practice these days is to be nice to your face and then send a scathing email to you and BCC your manager :-p

And what’s with this passport stuff- are you guys heading to the ‘ring or something?

Yeah, spill the beans on the passport so I can pre-warn the European immigration desk to give you a ‘special’ welcome.

  • db

Why European? I’m going to Mex….oops, I’ve said too much again.

and we’re (well some of us) are still waiting to know why you bought the Mac in the first place. This site is just a big frickin’ tease.

DB is taking a job as an IT specialist in Tilichiki Russia, in the remote eastern province of Koryakia. There they practice IPoD (IP over Donkey). It’s a slow process, but high bandwidth because you can fit a lot of burnt DVDs on the back of a donkey. Every month he and his donkey will have to travel by ferry to the nearest internet connection, in Magadan, download the internet and burn it onto 274 Blu-Ray discs, travel back and copy the discs onto a local server. It is a rough life, but is still less of a commute than what he has now.

Alas, it is a series of tubes. Not unlike The Alameda-Weehawken Burrito Tunnel.

Sucks that you have to have a passport to go to a NAFTA-ish country nowadays.

BTW, when’s the macbook on it’s way back?

  • db

The MacBook is on it’s way to Memphis right now. Just got the DHL box yesterday and I dropped it off this morning.

I would expect it to be back sometime the end of next week or the first part of the following week. Actually, I just hope I get it back before the month is out, but I’m not really going to hold my breath.

  • http://www.jwiltshire.org Joshua

Seriosly, Memphis? Can’t you just send it down the road to Woz or somethin’?

“Boy you got a prayer in Memphis.” (bad Mark Cohn reference)
