Wow, already 20 of these? Not too shabby. Today I shall talk about music. Well, kinda.
Recently a friend of mine purchased an Apple TV. I know, that’s what I said too. Even went nuts and got the 160GB model. I know, I know. I said that too.
But I got to talk to him about it. Why didn’t I know that the AppleTV played music? It’s essentially an iPod that isn’t portable and has a remote control. Nobody told me that either.
I’ve got quite a bit of music here at my desk. For the longest time I’ve been looking for an easy way to get that music to my kick-ass stereo. I’ve run wires. I’ve purchased devices. Heck, I’ve even plugged in my iPod. All give pretty good results, but what if I just want to plop down on the couch and turn something on?
Every other solution that I am aware of (including using an Airport Extreme) requires the computer. You have to hit play or start iTunes or something like that. While not horrible, I really don’t want an Airport (I prefer Buffalo devices, but we’ll save that for another day) and I’d really like to be able to just. Play. Music.
So why not an AppleTV? It lives with my stereo. If it’s in iTunes, it can see it. I can sit on the couch and start my music. Heck, with the right software, I can even push TV to it, or watch what I already have.
So it doesn’t do DVR stuff, but I already have one of those (plus transmission) so it’s not really necessary. I have a DVD player, so I don’t need it for movies but I could use it for that if I wanted too.
Does anyone know if it will play internet radio? The streams that open in iTunes (like SomaFM (Groove Salad…check it out!). It plays youtube, so I don’t see why it would play the streams.
Anyone out there have any experience with one of these? I know they are a bit spendy for a 40GB music player, but I think the convenience might be worth it.
