The Sunday Post XII

There are only a few things that I really enjoy doing. First is anything technology related as you might already know. Next would be anything relating to cars, especially the MINI Cooper.

The other is cooking. Yes, I’m a guy. Yes I like to cook.

I have plenty of gadgets and great gear in my kitchen too. A nice set of Henkel knives, a kick ass coffee pot, great pans and the like.

During my trip to Europe, all of the hotel rooms have these really cool contraptions in them. Unlike here in the states, where the rooms have those small coffee makers, over there they all have electric kettles.

What a fantastic device! I’ve heard of them before, but I’ve never seen one in action. boiling water super fast and they turn off once the water boils! Almost like magic.

Well, as it turns out, I was appearantly the very last person on the planet to own one. Every time I brough up this cool device to anyone the response was always “Oh yea, I have one. It’s great and I’ve been using it for years!”. Years you say? And I’m only finding out how great they are about a month ago? I’m not going to say anything about a lack of sharing going on here, but instead I will tell you that I can now count myself among the ranks of those who own an electric kettle.

But why would I need one living in SoCal during the summer?

You see, I’m also a bit of a coffee drinker. Some would call me a coffee snob, but I don’t think I’m that bad. Anyway, I do likes my coffee. But there are occassions when either I don’t want coffee in the morning or (and more likely) when I run out of coffee. When that happens, a nice cup of Earl Grey tea with a spot of milk does the job quite nicely.

But with the stove top kettle, it takes longer to boil the water then it does for a pot of coffee to brew. How annoying. And, no, I won’t use the microwave. I have mugs that I think are painted with lead based paints or something so they get so hot I can’t touch them. Sure, I could also use a pyrex measuring cup, but when is the last time you went searching for yours all bleary eyed because you have only been awake for 5 minutes? This is what I’m saying. So, electic kettle to the rescue!

Good chance I even used it this morning to have a cup of tea. Not because I didn’t want coffee, but because it’s there.

when I moved to the US my list of things to buy included an electric kettle. I was astounded that I could not find one, even more so when most people I knew had never seen such a thing.

Yeah, it took us some time to find a decent water cooker when we got back to the States too. I drink a bit of tea as well, but the majority of the time our water cooker (Sorry, got used to calling it that, it’s a “Wasserkocher” in German) is used to make coffee in our French Press :-D I don’t know how you make your coffee, but if you haven’t already, I’d recommend trying pressed coffee.

That is a brilliant idea! Besides, gives me a great excuse to replace the last press I had that broke.

    Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!

Yup, you’re “a bit of a coffee drinker” alright, lol :-)

that does look like a rather fancy coffee maker. I’m not much of a coffee drinker myself ( I’m a bit of a diet coke addict) but I may run the idea by the wife…our giant coffee pot is rather unattractive. Have you ever tried the nescafe’ instant coffee? It’s not half bad!

AcK! You did not just say “instant coffee” on my blog, did you? Oh my.

totally understand the no coffee tho. But, a good cup of tea always hits the spot.

Besides, old guys like me can’t really have diet coke any more. Too much sodium ;)

Fancy shmancy db. Well done. Can we now look forward to hearing stories of you making 4am “sleep tea”?
