Too Busy Being Awesome

A question posed to me this week by one of the White Roof Radio boys had me thinking, and researching. And, well, I’ll just come out and say it.

Holy Crap

I have been posting words to the internet, in some fashion of a blog or another, since about 2001. I can’t verify that however, so I have to dig through the archives. did you guys know that dbmini.us went ‘live’ on or about 9/24/_2002? That is the date of the first post. It might have been at blogger, but it’s there, so it counts.

WRR went live on August 1st, 2005. The show started a few months before that, on June 30th, 2005, which means I have been podcasting for 12.5 years. Let’s go back to the title question for a bit and have a proper, very long time in coming, rant.

Podcasting, at it’s core, is very incestuous. I’m on a few of the groups on Facebook and have listened to a few of the podcasts about podcasting, and they are nothing more than circle jerks of people telling each other lies about how big their shows are, and how many millions of downloads they have gotten. Each one of them, of course, is also an expert in podcasting, blogging and social media, as you would expect.

I guess my ego isn’t big enough.

Easy there kids. My ego is plenty big, trust me. And, as you probably know, I do have a bit of diva in me. I’m not trying to kid anyone. I just don’t think my ego is that big. I have a hard time showing off my work (not to you guys, but to strangers) and flaunting to a group of people that I can only imagine do not give a shit. These are the people that are popular. The yellers, the screamers, the ‘look-at-me’-ers. They are the ones with the shows that have triple digit downloads getting nominated for awards and crap like that.

That’s just not me.

Another thing that those people are really good at is burning cycles. Checking stats like it’s the end of times, constantly fussing with their website, trying to figure out why they aren’t getting any traffic from Facebook, and checking stats. A few of them can actually keep this up for more than a month before they burn out and stop making their show. Which is usually ok since their shows aren’t that great anyway. Oh, c’mon now, you know I’m right.

The thing that I learned, a very long time ago, is that all of that is crap. The trick is to focus those cycles on things that matter. The thing that matters is making a show. Fine tuning the show to something that is awesome, made with awesome people and listened to by people who have become fans because it’s awesome.

Why are we not more popular? To the contrary my dear Watson, I would argue that we are very popular. I would guess that there are very few MINI Cooper owners in the United States and Canada that have not heard about WRR. Do you know how many MINI Coopers there are in the United States and Canada?

Why are not getting awards and recoginition for being podcasting pioneers and producing a show for almost 13 years? That’s easy, it’s because we are too busy being awesome.

Ride Bikes Radio

Most of you have been playing the Don Burnside home game. Because of this, you also know that I re-discovered riding bikes. They are all over my social media and over here on my side of the screen, I’ll talk about bicycles to anyone that will listen.

So I have decided to put this excitement to good use.

I have been wanting to add additional shows [under the White Roof](http://www.whiteroofradio.com) for a while. Not looking to build up a full blown network, yet. Just another show or two. A bunch of people have been telling me that a bicycle podcast is what we needed, so a bicycle podcast is what I have created!

[Ride Bikes Radio](http://www.ridebikesradio.com) is the name, bicycling is our game. With my pal Brian Dallas, who has spent his entire life in and around bicycles, we talk every week about topics that would interest the normal, everyday cyclist. We aren’t talking about million dollar carbon bikes or the latest racing results, no sir! We are discussing safety, maintenance tips, community news & events. Oh, and beer. Do not forget the beer.

Our fourth episode just went out and I’m really please with the direction the show is taking. If you like riding bicycles for any reason, you should check us out. The latest episode is below and you can also [find us](http://www.ridebikesradio.com/subscribe) where finer podcasts are served.

You’re Going to Podcamp. Now What?

Just like last year, I will again be presenting at PodCampAZ. Just like last year, I will be doing a talk about Podcasting. But this year will be different.

This year, instead of just talking about Podcasting, I’m going to get anyone that wants, to actually _make_ a podcast. That’s right. A short audio podcast (or video), uploaded to a server, posted to a WordPress site and made available in iTunes!

There is a chance that I will also be leading a session that will continue, more in-depth and hands on, where the talk leaves off. I’m pretty excited and can’t wait to start putting it all together. Watch this space for more details.

And if you are going to be in or around Phoenix November 11-12, drop by the University of Advanced Technology to check it out. Last year’s event was pretty amazing and I will almost bet that this year’s will be even better! Click the logo for full details.

Something new

Some of you might have been fans of The Hollywood Car show, long since on hiatus. Well, after months of planning, Tim and I are back to our old shenanigans in a new home; The Hollywood Garage! Episode 2 is below and we think it’s pretty cool. Check it out!

We’re back again! Talking about cool stuff from Hollywood as we like to do like **X-Men First Class** as seen above, **Logan’s Run**, **Die Hard 5** and a bunch of other movies that we picked from Tim’s blog!

Also, our first interview this week with the world famous **Uncle Joe Benson**! He has been in and around the music industry for years and you probably know him best from **KLOS**. Or, maybe from **auto racing!**. Yes, he has a team of cars, among other things, that you can see over at unclejoebenson.com.

Stick around! Next week we will have a new feature that we are sure you will love and the following week we’ll have **Dave Kunz** from ABCTV in LA on to talk about the cars he likes!

Finally, you can follow us on Twitter and Facebook (click like on the right). We are also pleased to announce that you can **finally** get The Hollywood Garage Podcast in iTunes!

PodcampAZ: Podcast Consistency – Keep your listeners

On Saturday, November 20th, I lead a session at PodcampAZ about Podcast consistency, keeping your listeners and getting new ones. I think there are some great tips here, hopefully you will find it useful.

Some of the items discussed in the show.

  • Audio Hijack Pro for Mac can be found here
  • Pamela Skype Recorder for Windows can be found here
  • My podcast can be found at WhiteRoofRadio.com

If you were one that attended my session, thank you for your time! If you have any follow up questions at any time, please do not hesitate to contact me.

This is audio taken from my Flip Video video camera. No video because the zoom was set to full and that’s a view of me that nobody needs, really.
