I do more than websites. Some of the more involved projects I have done are listed below.

Networking and Tech

Gindroz and Company Travel Services. Installed Windows Server (2008) to support file management and 5 Windows 7 Workstations. Upgraded site to FiOS internet service, added a gigabit switch to control network traffic and moved email functions to Google docs. Site can be fully supported anywhere there is internet connectivity and the entire system has been setup to allow for easy relocation when the time comes.

Cottonwood Cove Resort & Marina. Installed file server and computer-based PMS system. Designed and installed LAN. Designed and implemented a wLAN to cover an area almost 1 mile in diameter. Easily expanded, it allows user authentication on the domain, access to files across the network as well as Internet access.

Beacon Bay Enterprises. Designed and installed LAN. Installed and configured new server with tape-backup system and all new workstations. Built a VPN to allow file transfers from each location to corporate office. Soon to also allow credit card processing through the remote gateway in compliance with PCI DSS standards.

Custom Business Solutions. Migrated all office workstations from Windows 98 to Windows NT/Windows 2000. Designed and built a server-type computer to be used with POS systems with over 100 units installed. Designed and assembled POS system training manual. Complete redesigned the company website and logo. Completely redesigned a web service for more reliable operation and navigation. Designed and built intranet application to allow remote access to a project tracking database by remote users.

POS/PMS

Point-of-Sale is one of my specialities. I have yet to find one that I could get fully set-up and train the users on.

Coast Highway Traders

Installation, setup and training of consignment store POS system and secure wireless network to allow back office to generate reports and perform other functions. Site can be fully supported anywhere there is internet connectivity.

Project leader, Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City

Point-of-Sale system comprised of over 100 terminals.

Installed POS in approximately 12 outlets within the Casino

Trained over 500 employees on system operation

Worked with server team on configuration of redundant systems

Project Manager, Beacon Bay Enterprises

Upgraded 14 locations from electronic cash registers to computer-based Point-of-Sale system.

Implemented high speed credit card processing.

Implemented and promoted Gift Card Program.

Implemented security systems to comply with PCI DSS Standards.

Property Management System, Forever Resorts

Implemented computer-based PMS system at Cottonwood Cove Resort & Marina and Mormon Lake Lodge. This system was duplicated and installed at over 10 resorts in the US.

Professional

This site started as a place to develop sites and to show the work that I have already done. But it has grown into so much more.

You will find that I am an avid MINI Cooper enthusiast. I founded and host WhiteRoofRadio, one of the most popular automotive podcasts on the planet. I also keep a motoring log at dbmini.us and am the technologist/editor for Motoringfile, the most influential site for the MINI Cooper.

During the day I’m a professional IT/Social Media/Web guy, specializing in introducing or upgrading technology to small and mid-sized companies. I am also a professional trainer, and believe that proper, thorough training with adequate documentation is always better than not, and cheaper too. For websites, my medium of choice is WordPress for it’s ease of use and flexibility.

Personal

In my free time, I love to cook. This is another one the things I am truly passionate about. If it weren’t for my love of technology, I’m sure I would have been a chef. And with over 12 years in the restaurant business, I was well on my way. When I do cook, I prefer to cook for others, especially large (over 15) groups. I get a great amount of satisfaction in providing a great meal to those I care about. Must be the Italian in me.

Of course, you can’t forget the music. There is always time for music. I have what some have called a large collection and it is extremely varied. Music is with me everywhere I go. For motivation, inspiration or just pure entertainment. This is another of my passions and it is something I definitely could not live without.

w(t)f Video Hour

This was a feature I started on my blog when it previously lived at windthefrog.net. One of my favorite lines from any movie was from Toy Story. The line, of course, was when Woody was in that evil kids bedroom, getting ready to start an elaborate escape plan and he exclaimed “wind the frog!”. In the context it was funny and odd. Out of context it’s even funnier and odder. Bonus? Check the short version.

Disclaimer

I do try to follow a few rules when writing on my site, especially the blog. I do not talk about where I am working or what I am doing, specifically, unless given express permission to do so in a public forum. If, however, you would like more information about what I might be working on, feel free to contact me for more details.

Technical

Donburnside.com is running the latest version of WordPress using a custom theme of my own design. Don Burnside logo created by Fireball Tim. All of my sites are hosted by Site 5.

All photos and video are taken with a variety of cameras that include the iPhone 4S, Droid Incredible, Canon Digital Rebel, Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3, a Blackberry Storm, a Blackberry Tour, The Flip Ultra, The Flip Mino HD, Canon Vixia HF100, an LG EnV or Skitch. Video hosted at YouTube and Vimeo. You can find most of my photos at Flickr.

I’ve been posting over here for a few years now. Not promoting it so much, or linking a whole lot across the ‘net. My thoughts have always been “if they find it, great. If not, that’s ok too” when it comes to traffic here at w(t)f.

It started off with a bunch of spammers and this guy. Then a few more readers came along. The long way too, usually following the link to donburnside.com that adorns the bottom of many pages I create. This brought the readership total up to about 7.

Then I started the show. about another 10 of you took the trouble to find this. Thanks!

Then I did the theme change. Including links to all of my sites on all of my sites. Recipe posts at flickr brought in some n00bs too. And the videos at Viddler.

After all of this, you, the wtf reader, are now about 1200 strong! Yes, holy crap indeed.

Now, in comparison, you are only about 1/2 as many as the MINI site. But that site cheats. It gets mentioned in the show. It’s linked up at MF among other places. It gets better search refs too, and has a higher google ranking. For the most part, it’s been fairly organic.

Now, to do the same with w(t)f.

You might see a few minor changes around the site. I’ve added tags (since all the kids are doing it). And, I’m going to be a keyword whore. But only for the next month. But I’m not going to do any overt promotion short of the occassional link on twitter. But only if I think it’s an awesome post. Remember, I hate spam worse than you do.

Right now you are on track to be 1500 strong this month. I want to see if my tweaks and whatnot can increase that by at least 500 for the month of June. While I’m not going to ask for your help, if you do come across a post that you think is worthy of sharing, please feel free to do so. Time to bring w(t)f out of the closet and into prime time.

Here we go!

Updated this to 2.5.1 today. That was interesting.

Started to upload, but I got quota errors. Great. Had to create a new account and log a ticket. But it’s done.

Then, got about 1/2 way through tomorrows post, wanted to upload a photo but I couldn’t. The Viddler Plug-in kinda breaks it (I dropped them a line about it already too).

Everything done with transmit. I wasn’t feeling it before I discovered the duplicate command on the remote server. How cool is that? That’s as good as Windows copy-in-place feature. I was able to easily make a backup of the wp-content dir before starting the upload. Perhaps I will give this Transmit a few more days.

All of this happened after I spent the entire day on the phone and doing actually work. Odd since I’m not really supposed to be working either. Still, 1 8 hour day of billing has been logged on my sheet.

During this day, I spent way more time in Windows via VNC and dial-up connections than should be allowed by law. I worked very hard to get VPN working and prefer to use Remote Desktop wherever possible (that way, I don’t have to start VM). But there isn’t RD on Windows 2000 and I do not have, nor do I want, regular phone service at the house.

I think I’m going out to Arizona for a few days next week to do some work at a resort that is having problems with their reservation system. Trying to decide if I should drive the 600 miles (one way) or fly into Phoenix and rent a car. If flight+car is less than $200, I might go that way. The place is pretty remote, so the last place I want to take the MINI with bad suspension is on crappy dirt roads.

Trying to get back to going to the gym every other day. Actually, I would like to do Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, but I’ve been falling short. I’ve been using the ball at home, which is helping, but I’m not able to do the amount of cardio I want to do. The last week I’ve been back on track, I just hope it can continue.

Wondering about the video hour. Numbers are dropping off a bit (yes, I check). That means either you have gotten busy or lost interest. I only started doing them to get used to seeing myself on the screen. What say you? Keep going or stop? I don’t think I’ll stop doing video, maybe just that one (or stop posting it here).

I opened Google reader tonight and I have over 1K unread articles. I scanned through and read the ones I wanted to, but I think some trimming might be in order.

My trip to Florida is booked. I have to change planes, twice. One of them has propellors. I’m not pleased. I do, however, get to drive an R56 MC to Boston though with the Todd’s, so I’m a bit stoked about that. Be sure to check the route. If you are nearby one of the stops, I’d love to meet you (that includes you CJ, if you can manage a drive to Savannah).

I guess that’s it. Now, on to emails! W00t!

My current system is pretty antiquated, using a combination of spreadsheets and handwritten notes. I know, how 19th century!

I’ve tried some time/billing software but most of it is complicated, too expensive or doesn’t work in a manner that suits my needs.

Is there a time/billing program out there, Windows or Mac, that you have used that you like? And not one of those online services either.

You know, just leave a note below. Links are extremely helpful too. I’ll keep an eye on the comment queue to make sure everything gets through.
