Last week my Grandmother turned 80. I’m working with film reels that were made in the early 50′s. I have over 200 tracks in iTunes right now that were made before 1955.

I’m sure you would agree, that is quite a bit of old.

Besides all of that, it would appear that I have also turned into the family archivist. I have a Great Grandmother that is 99 and turns 100 in March. Consensus is that she might not make it to 100, so I have been gathering photos and scanning them to get ready for the eventual day when they will be needed for the funeral.

It’s not that I mind so much. It is that I am starting to forget what ‘new’ is like.

Maybe not entirely.

I do have a new bank account

I did make a new version of my resume

This is a new post

I have a few pairs of new underwear

I have seen all of the new episodes of Heroes and Chuck

I have recently removed all of the old music from my iPod. I’m almost done dealing with the old video. I only have a few more old photos to go through and scan.

I’m hoping in a few weeks time I will be able to work on new stuff again. I’m getting pretty tired of the old.

If you are tired of reading about the old, click over to my flickr where I have posted a few new pictures (much like the one above).

I wasn’t completely without Internet. I was able to ‘borrow’ a few cups from a neighbor to check emails and other important things. Now I have a ton of emails to go through, logs to check and I’m very afraid to open Net News Wire.

Oh yea, a little bit of speed boost too. Gotta love the FIoS

Imported all .dv files into iMovie

Next step will be the edit and organization for burning to DVD. The way I’m planning to do it is to keep each separate in editing and exporting, and just burning a bunch of them to dvd with menu choices. I think it’s going to work out fine if not terribly time consuming.

…he says as he types this out on a HP Pavilion media center

Video sucks.

Ok, maybe that is a little harsh. How about video sucks on Windows or on a slow Mac?

I’ve been working on this practically all week. I’ve got the files encoded as .dv and as .wmv. I tried to do this on the Mac, but it just takes way to long. At least it finishes.

In Windows Movie Maker, the files will only save to about 30% and then it stops saying there isn’t enough hard drive space. What? I have 45GB of space available and you are only making a file that is 125MB in size. Double you tee eff windows?

Searching finds it might be a memory issue. Or a problem with the source files. Or a codec problem. Or a video problem. Or an incompatibility problem. You get the drift. At least I don’t feel bad in that there are others having this same exact problem, yet there isn’t a fix that works.

So (and this I dread) I am going to take the videos home and work on them there. Slow as my Mac is, I will get it done. Just so long as I can convince my grandfather that it’s ok if I take the external hard drive home to work on these. He’ll hate it not happening here, to the point that he was almost going to make us go up and buy a Mac (Grandma talked him out of it).

Time for some suggestions from the home audience. Honestly, will a 20″ iMac (the good one) be noticably faster than the MacBook? Or should I look at getting a Windows box for this? Or use Final Cut? HELP!

For those of you that missed it on the twitter, I am still not a fan of driving from Orange County, CA to my house.

Also if you missed it on the twitter, kids that live behind me decided my house would be good target for BB gun fire. Even after they shot one through the window. I think the free ride in a cop car from their house to ours convinced them it was a bad idea. I am also sure the cost of the window will help.

Old people think video, remember photographs. But I’ll drive up there anyway when I can to crawl around in an attic to double check.

I probably would have missed traffic if I would have left earlier. But Grandma made liver for me for dinner. Couldn’t pass that up. /me likey liver. Yes with onions. And bacon. Good stuff!

I have a few photos I need to upload. Maybe tomorrow.

I have some video I need to process and upload. Maybe tomorrow.

I’ve moved pressd. donburnside.com/pressd is where you will find it now. More on this later in the week.

To the old dude at Starbucks wearing the shear-almost-too-tight-white shirt. Ew.

Grand Dad drinks Bloody Mary’s with Tequilla. Don’t think I wasn’t tempted. If it weren’t for the fact that tequilla makes me miss flights, I might have tried it.

People look at me funny in traffic as I sing along to the iPod. Hey Mr. Comb Over, wtf?

2 nights of record breaking bad sleep in a row. I know, I’m on a roll. I’m hoping to break that trend.

Now.

Almost all of the film on reels has been digitized and most of that has been converted into DV format, ready for editing. I still have to go through and see if there are any reels that I need to redo for whatever reason (usually because the DV cam is off frame a little). I expect to have the last of the reels digitized today.

Next steps are.

Find a Super 8 projector that I can use for about 8 50′ reels. If I can’t find one, I might send them out to a service

Get a slide scanner. They have boxes and boxes of slides but no negatives. Grandpa thought we would transfer them the same as the video. No, I don’t think so

Sort and do a preliminary edit of all video

Begin assembly of the DVD, using video and film.

Once the film and video are done, work on the audio

Looks like this should be done before the end of September, and except for the sample I showed you above, I am more than pleased with the overall results.

Anyone need some film transfers done?

Sure there was a day 2, but I didn’t really share.

Have I mentioned that I have made the Bell & Howell projector my bitch?

Look at that. Running all smooth and silky. Not too bad for such a tempermental machine that’s for sure.

But I have figured out the trick to get it run right for the most part. I was able to knock out almost 4 300′ reels today in about 2 hours, and I’m very pleased with that. I say almost 4 because one of them broke part way through the transfer and I couldn’t find the glue we are using when that happens, so I’ll do that one again tomorrow.

One of the hurdles I’m running up against now is drive space. So far, the 8 reels I’ve captured are taking up almost 6gb of space in the format right from the camera. As soon as I start converting those to dv so I can edit them, I expect that number to triple. And since I only have about 5gb of free space left on my Mac, I’ll have to move those to an external drive to process and edit them. That will slow me down a bit I’m sure.

8 300′ reels down, 9 to go. Then I get to start in on the 50′ reels. I’ll be using my grandfathers external hard drive by then for sure to storage and transportation. I’m also hoping to somehow score a more powerful machine out of this as well. Would be handy since iMovie takes over an hour to import these from the camera directly. Ugh.

So I spent about an hour yesterday going through Dad’s shed looking for his 8mm projector. I found his screen. A few boxes of photos. Some antique do-dads. A tic-tac-toe game I made in 7th grade shop class.

But not a projector.

So, it’s back to the grand ‘rents today to continue the project, using Grand Dad’s projector. For now, I’m just going to have to make it work.

In other news…

Fireballed.com has been updated and is now live. Feedback, as usual, is greatly appreciated. The other site I’m working on should be done today ready for the switch over shortly thereafter.

The Hollywood Car Show domain is live and site is almost finished. Shooting for go live this weekend. Episode 4 is in the tubes too, so go get it.

Was able to put a fraud alert on my credit across all agencies. Next up, a trip to Temecula to get another copy of my birth certificate, right after I procure a new lock box.

Next week w(t)f should get back to normal apprearance. I just need to find the 20 minutes or so I need to move pressd out to it’s own install.

Check pressd too. The RIAA has shut down muxtape and I’ve been reading that Pandora is, again, in trouble, but not with the RIAA.

Ok, gotta go to the beach!
