Power outages

I hate them. They cause me much grief they do.

Here at the casa of db the power was out for about 30 minutes. Out, then a surge, then out. No damage to any of the electronics, but I had to complete restart my network, renew IP address and it caused all of my cookies to disappear. Great.

But, really, it’s not near as bad as when there is a power outage at the folk’s place. What a cluster fuck.

I’ve mentioned before the reservation system that they have in the motel I believe and it’s inability to work and play nice with Windows XP. The problem is not only with WinXP, but also with a few of the Win2K updates. There is only 1 work around, and that is to start the reservation system BEFORE the XP computers start.

So, when a network restart is required at the cove, 4 PC’s have to be turned off, 1 router and 2 switches have to be power cycled, 2 Win2K boxes have to be restarted then the 4 WinXP boxes turned back on.

Wouldn’t be so bad if they would just remember the right sequence. I get a call everytime for this. I finally typed it up for them and sent it over. Hopefully it gets printed and posted for all to see.

At least the power didn’t go out here today. Happened yesterday and the A/C took until midnight to get the inside temp of the house to 78. UGH.

    Whoa, a whole 78 degrees! Wow… I think we finally got DOWN to 78 last night in the back of the house sometime around 2 AM…

    I’m guessing today the temp in the house (with the little AC we have in the living room) will top out around 92…

    Here’s my best power failure story for your reading pleasure:

    1996- I’m on a ship in the Gulf of Alaska. We have some equipment that in the event of a power failure will completely dump their information. Reloading everything is a good 45 minute process (not counting the logs that needed to be written and the safe’s that needed to be opened), but if we can shut everything down in advance of the power failure, when the power comes back online we can start everything up at the flick of a switch… We have UPS’ but not enough for all the critical stuff (

    So one afternoon we get the call from Engineering: “Hey we’re going to be doing some drills down here and we’re going to kill the power in 5 minutes.”

    My watchstander: “Great thanks, that’s plenty of time for us to get set here”

    And as he hung up the phone, the power went out… ALL of the power, including the lights that aren’t supposed to go out unless there’s a catastrophic power failure…

    So after 5 minutes of very loud cursing, we settled down in the dark to listen to the beeping of the UPS’s, because well there was nothing else to do… We ended up in the dark for about 2 hours…

    The story goes that down in Engineering, some poor 18 year old junior engineer was standing in front of the main bus panel for the whole ship whailing “OH GOD I DIDN’T MEAN TO!” after he plunged us into darkness…

    As for heat, CO got it’s fair share this week. suppose to cool back to normal mid weekish though. Come on 80s, bring it! :D
