I think I’m going to switch back

Posted in Mac Stuff,Rants,Tech, technology — by Don on 01/09/08

No, not to Windows. At least not yet anyway. I think I’m going to switch back to OSX Tiger. Well, maybe not. I’m having some really strange things happen that never happened with Tiger. Like…

  • Battery life sucks. I used to get close to 4 hours of use without having to go on the juice. Now it’s about an hour, maybe. And my battery is less than a year old.
  • Skype won’t stay connected. Actually, I think I might have this one fixed. I had to reinstall Leopard to fix it, but it was broken since I upgraded. This is a major thing for me, as most of you know.
  • Performance has dropped off. Slow slow slow. Apps are slow to start. OSX is slow to boot. Apps are slow to quit (if they even quit).
  • Shutting down. Odd, but when I go to shutdown I expect that to happen. At least once a week the screen goes blank but it stays running. I actually have to power it off at the switch.
  • MAMP and VMWare have been acting weird. VMWare has also been slow to start, won’t let me shutdown even the appliance isn’t running and other weirdness. MAMP has been acting up lately as well, saying it’s running, but not really and only a reboot fixes it.

All of these problems did not exist before I upgraded. All of the apps I’m running are the lately greatest and updated for Leopard. All updates are current. I haven’t even installed office because it’s such a pig.

Or maybe I will do 1 more clean install of Leopard first. I’d hate to give up spaces. I will keep you posted.

Check your RAM. My old PowerBook G4 did the same under 10.4. Turns our RAM was busted / faulty.

not a bad idea. I’ve got the old 1gb stick here someplace. I think I’ll put it in this weekend and see what it does.

Hang in there db – I too was a little skeptical at first but its has all settled down nicely with 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 is only a few days out at this point. There are so many better capabilities with Leopard – just be patient. Alo try the Leopard Tips widget at http://www.leopardtricks.com/get-widget

I’m not a fan of widgets. They take too long to load and I can never remember the key and it’s different when I’m mobile or when I’m at home.

I keep an eye on Mactips.org instead.
