Firefox vs. Camino vs. Safari

I’m having browser issues on the Mac one could say. Let’s describe them, shall we?

Safari – Love the speed, hate the the lack of control I have over the app (mostly tabs).

Camino – Love the speed, tabs are better than Safari, but no extensions. For day to day, it’s better for me than Safari.

Firefox – Slow like a snail over salted snow. But, tab control to beat all other tab control and all those yummy extensions.

Before I go further, Pimp My Safari does not equal extensions. In fact, there is very little there I would find useful, including a way to have all links open in a new tab no matter how I clicked them.

But, enter Camino, which lets me almost do what I want with tabs. At least I can get them to open in a new window. Biggest problem with Camino now is that I can’t specify multiple tabs to open when the app launches.

However, both Safari and Camino do something that I really wish Firefox would; allow you to scroll a page, even if the browser isn’t in focus. Using the scroll wheel on the logitech mouse, of course, since I’m not afraid of buttons.

To be able to do that in FireFox, the window has to have focus (btw…just like windows). I’ve become accustomed to being able to scroll over whatever I want, where ever I want.

So here is what I am looking for in a browser. I want the speed and Mac functionality of Camino or Safari with the customization ability and tab features of FireFox.

Maybe Firefox 3 will hook me up?

a way to have all links open in a new tab no matter how I clicked them.

There’s a preference in Safari 3.1 for that, now. It may not be in the pref pane, so I’ll dump my defaults for you when I get home (nudge me if I forget). With Safari 3.1, every link, no matter where it comes from, opens in a new tab, even links that try to open themselves in a new window.

Firefox definitely has the extensions down. Too bad about the speed, stability, and user-friendliness, all of which makes baby Jesus cry. There are some new developer tools built into Safari 3.0 which supposedly rival those of Firebug, but I haven’t played with that yet myself. If you need a JavaScript shell, check out Jash.

What other tab control are you missing?

My last two comments didn’t show up, so I’m not sure this one will, but here’s that “defaults” command I mentioned in one of them.

defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true
