Evernote on the Storm

Evernote on the stormEvernote finally announced a version for Blackberry phones. Specifically (as of this posting) for the Storm, Bold and Curve. This one has been a long time coming.

We’re very excited about this release because, like a BlackBerry, Evernote is designed to fit perfectly into today’s fluid life/work mix. The minute you need to remember something, take out your BlackBerry and use Evernote to capture or recall whatever it is, then go on with your life. Isn’t it nice not having to worry about forgetting stuff?

It went live on App world yesterday (search Evernote, capital E) as a free download. I grabbed it when it finally went live, installed it and have been playing with it for a little bit and can say that’s it’s not the best solution.

As you can see from the screenshot above, it will allow you to post a text note, snapshot, audio note or a file. Those features work ok, but a little slow on the Storm. You can also view notes, but doing that or almost anything else launches the Evernote Mobile site in the browser.

If you do more than post text to Evernote, then this is definitely the app for you. However, if you use Evernote primarily to leave text notes for yourself, there are other ways to do that that work better in my opionion.

If you are a Twitter user, you can friend up @myen. After you do that, you can then link your twitter account to your Evernote.

Once that is done, you can send a D myen SMS message via Twitter (short code 40404 if you are in the US) and it will automatically show up every where you have Evernote running.

If you have been dying to get Evernote on your Storm, go ahead and get it. When frustration sets in because the app is too slow or you hate the BB browser, try the twitter method instead.

Right, I have 2 Macs

twitter screen grab

I still haven’t completely wrapped my head around this concept, but now I have 2 Macs. And, I have data on one that I need on the other, and vice versa. That is how I discovered remembered that I have an Evernote account. It sure is coming in handy with to-do lists and the like.

One thing that I was amazed about was the simplicity that is known as networking 2 Macs. Turn them one, check a box and that’s it? Really? No opening the Network Panel and making sure the TCP/IP connections are the same? No making sure they are on the same subnet or in the same domain/workgroup? No duplicating user accounts? No multiple reboots? What what what?

For those of you not familiar, Windows machines, especially in a home environment, do not network that easily. Well, maybe with Vista, but I haven’t done that yet. Networking XP or Windows 2000 machines not in a domain (re: office) is a serious chore. Workgroup name has to match, users have to match, moon has to be in the correct phase, and you need the magic monkey. Way too much hassle and, frankly, it’s way to difficult.

Next up will be the actual synchronizing of my Macs. Address books, calendars and possibly docs. I hear good thing about Google Sync, so I’m probably going to try that. I would be interested in hearing thoughts about MobileMe however. While I don’t like the idea of having to depend on a service that costs me money every year, if it works, then that’s that.

Yea, this Mac thing is pretty cool. Glad I didn’t switch.

Just some things

Trying to get back on track after being gone for 2 weeks. Feeling the need to post, but not really having anything, a quick list of things that I’m either looking at, playing with or doing.

  • So, I have an Evernote account. Downloaded the app even. Does anyone have a good use for this? I mean, I keep a little notebook for notes and whatnot, do I really need this online?
  • I’ve been giving thought to trying out Remember the Milk. But, again, do I need it?
  • Fluid App is now to a point where I can recommend it. I’m using it for gMail and Hahlo (for Twitter) and it’s working quite well. Click over and see what others are doing with it, or use it for your favorite-gotta-have-get-bummed-when-it-crashes site. I think you’ll be pleased. Watch for a full write up in about a week.
  • Firefox 3 rules! I haven’t used it on Windows yet, but on the Mac it’s awesome. So nice to have it back again, with all my plugins and settings. It’s like moving back home.
  • Wordpress 2.5 no longer has excerpts for pages, which is annoying. Luckily, I found a plug-in that works well until the functionality returns (rumored in 2.6). Now, to get those excerpts to show up on other pages.
  • Speaking of Wordpress 2.5, have any of you played with the new image handling features? It’s pretty cool. Watch for me to start using that more here, there and everywhere I’m running WP.

Off to work more on a custom WP theme.
