May be updated throughout the day…
- 220GB takes about 4 hours to copy, firewire to firewire
- Costco has the best price for dual interface (USB and firewire) 500GB drives. $150
- SuperDuper! to copy my user folder is also pretty speedy, but not as fast as the disk to disk copy
- Erasing the disk didn’t take near as long as it would on Windows.

good luck with the upgrade today. Also, turn time machine off until you go to bed- the intial copy takes forever.

I know you aren’t planning on using Time Machine, but as a general alert to others: The trick to a speedy first back up with Time Machine is to turn off Spotlight (in your SysPrefs!) during the initial back up. Not having to constantly reindex the drive whilst it’s backing up makes it go a lot quicker

Yea, not planning on using Time Machine like Josh said. It’s the constant access the hard drive that would drive me batty. I will, however, be doing nightly backups of my user folder instead, since the lappy is always connected at night.
Disk copy completed. Disk erased and SuperDuper is backing up my user folder.
