This or That?

Spending a fair amount of time out and about lately. Which is to say that I haven’t been anywhere near my Mac or an Internet connection, short of email/Facebook access from the Blackberry. Boy would it be handy if I had Internet access while out in the field. So I’ve been checking prices and I’m not happy with what I have found.

My local Starbucks use AT&T for wifi internet connectivity. I can buy 2 hour blocks for $4 or sign up for an account, locked into a 1 year contract for $20 per month. I could also add tethering to the Blackberry. For the ability to do this, Verizon will gladly charge me an additional $30 per month, again on a 1 year contract. While I’m not terribly keen on either of these, AT&T is appealing because it’s $10 a month cheaper, but I would be stuck getting access at Starbucks. Verizon is as well because I know the service is good and I would have the flexibility to access anywhere as long as I have a USB cable.

There is a new option that I will be researching this weekend as well.  As it turns out, since I am a Verizon FiOS customer, they are offering WiFi connectivity free at select locations.  From what I understand, I only need install an app on my computer to use for connecting.  I think this would be the way to go, mostly because I’m such a big fan of free.

I am curious as to how you connect when mobile via computer (not iPhone).

Where you come from

About 3 months ago I decided to put donburnside.com on Google Analytics instead of using Awstats available to me from Site5. I’ve been a fan of Awstats for a while, probably mostly because the inflated numbers always make me feel like my sites are getting more traffic than they really do.

Anyway, a quick check of stats this morning shows me the graph above. More than half of all visitors to donburnside.com get here via search referrals. That might seem impressive, but considering I’m getting less than 1K uniques per month, maybe no so much.

In other news, Garmin Nuvi 255w is in my possession and a full review will be following shortly. Also, I’m in the process of finding a decent, free, backup solution for Windows. Full reviews/break downs to follow later in the week as well.

While I’m not posting so much, you can still follow me on Twitter or Facebook if you are so inclined.

The Sunday Post #74

It’s been hot. I wasn’t feeling very good a few days this week. And, it’s been hot, but we already covered that.

The Sunday List Post

  • Added some new header images. Click through to check ‘em out!
  • Firefox 3.5 broke Google Gears. Google fixed Gears. Firefox released 3.5.1 and broke Gears again. Anyone?
  • Speaking of FF3.5, I’m finding it to be awesome again. Especially after how bad 3.0 was on the Mac (and Windows)
  • Yes, I will be selling my MINI. No, I’m probably not going to tell you why. Let’s just say that I no longer make enough money to afford to be a MINI owner, k?
  • The Storm is bugging me again. Sometime this week I’m going to stop into my local VZW store and check out the Tour.
  • The Garmin Nuvi 255w is pretty awesome for the most part, but I have a few issues. Full review to follow
  • You can’t tweet Amazon Associate links. Just an FYI
  • I need to start carrying cameras with me again. I don’t think I’ve turned on the Canon or Panasonic for over a month.
  • Hard drives that short out towers will smoke when connected to an external adapter. FYI.
  • Mom desktop Extreme (for those of you that missed it earlier this week): 18098310-a4ea0551a3e8d58b2429052da7be86e3.4a63d259-full
  • Did I mention it’s been hot?

At least I’ve been fairly busy for the most part. I could use being busier (read making more money) but am not complaining because at least I have work. Of course, I could always use more work, so if you hear of anything, be sure to let me know.

Oh yea, WRR fans might want to be around this coming Thursday at around 7:00p PST for Woofcast 300. Rumor is the boys will be doing it live.

I’m tired

I write this today as my new Garmin nüvi 255W charges and I cool down with a tall glass of ice water. I say cool down mostly because of this.

Sure it’s not the 120 they’ve been getting in the deserts of CA or in Vegas, but to be out and about, getting in and out of a car, that’s pretty warm. It doesn’t help that the nights have been quite balmy as well, sticking into the 80s without any noticeable wind. All this heat, I think, is seriously affecting my quality of sleep, or complete lack thereof.

For the last few nights, I distinctly remember waking up more than once per night. Not for very long, but my sleep was still interrupted by something. If I had to guess, it’s probably a combination of my fan, which has a very occasional squeak, and the heat. I do know that it’s driving me sleepy by 6pm at night.

At least I have new stuff to play with. As I mentioned, new GPS unit on the charge. I used it a little today and it seemed to work ok, but that was because it was the new toy, right? They always seem to work right when they still have that new electronics smell. You can watch for a full review of that coming soon.

Assuming, of course, that I can stay awake long enough.
