Sony rootkit based on LGPL and breaches licence?

If this is true, more bad press for Sony (hopefully):

“It turns out that the rootkit contains pieces of code that are identical to LAME”, “This software is licensed under the so called Lesser Gnu Public License (LGPL). According to this license Sony must comply with a couple of demands …”, “Sony complied with non of these demands…”.

My next big project

And the first time I’ve done anything like this on such a large scale.

I’ll be setting up my first wLAN. Over about a 3/4 mile radius.

I’m fairly excited about it actually. I’ve already spec’d the parts and hopefully they will get purchased in a week or two so I can start installation and testing.

I’ll keep ya posted.

Don’t buy this CD!

I’m a bit late to this party, but it’s been a busy week.

For those of you that haven’t heard, Sony’s DRM has some funky provisions when you try to play the tracks on a Windows PC: From Mark’s Sysinternals Blog

The DRM reference made me recall having purchased a CD recently that can only be played using the media player that ships on the CD itself and that limits you to at most 3 copies.

What this means is that in order for you to play this particular CD on a Windows PC, you have to install the player that comes on the disk. While not necessarily a bad thing, there is a small problem with the player. (Read on…)
