Upgrades

To avoid further headaches at the office, I have made the executive descision to migrate all 7 workstations to FireFox. If there is a virus out there, I guarantee these peeps will manage to get it.

Also, finally got the T1 hooked up. Which is nice. I’m a big fan of Earthlink and about all of their products. While they may be higher priced than most, it just works. That and support doesn’t f’ around either, which is always a nice touch. But, the DSL that we had at the office was slower than dial-up, thanks to being just on the outside of the distance from the switch and having crappy copper in the ground. It’s not a full T. It is pulling double duty for our telephone access as well. That part should be hooked up sometime this week! That means the 20 year old ATT Merlin system can finally come down off the wall and hopefully into a dumpster someplace. Anyone need a Merlin handset?

On a personal note…while not having to deal with bad dates or other miscellaneous girl problems, I did come dangerously close to really f’ing things up last week. A touch of selfishness kicked in, and a bit of nervousness too. Anyway, took about a week, but all is as good, if not better, than it was and crusing along at quite a bitchin’ clip. Which is good, because I think I might have actually found the one person that I wouldn’t mind staying with for as long as humanly possible, if not a little bit longer.

So, who else has taken the Mozilla Firefox plunge???

and, these are just wrong…

honestly people…
wheeled porn…sure, it was only 1, but did you really think you would find anything like that on a site called windthefrog? sheesh
frog on turd…this is just wrong on so many different levels, I don’t even know where to start. Where you looking for a frog sitting on a turd? Is this some kind of slang that I’m not aware of yet?
wind net cars…new technology coming out of Detroit. I was hoping I would be able to hold off on releasing this information as long as possible, but someone was just sharp enough to catch me.

ok, time for bed.

reason #153 why I like FireFox better than IE

yet another security problem with IE that is causing all kinds of grief.

Really. Download Firefox. Trust me. You can follow the link over there on the side, or go right to www.mozilla.org.

No, go. Do it now. Besides, I’m sure the postmaster will tell you, Firefox is teh awesomE!’!

C’mon gang. You owe it too yourself and your support lines to make the switch as soon as possible. Besides, the web really looks better if you use firefox anyway. Trust me.

the tale of 2 players

So, I’m still using MusicMatch.
Plus, I’m still using iTunes.

Why?

Most of you have been using iTunes for a while now, I’m sure. The store interface is awesome. The quality of the downloaded tracks is fantastic as well. And the downloaded tracks burn great in Audio CD format.

But, have you tried making a comp disc using iTunes? Or rip a disc to MP3 format? Using iTunes for Windows, I have found that the quality of the ripped tracks isn’t that great. Also, the quality of the disc’s burned into CDA also aren’t that hot. Of course, I should be using AAC, but since I don’t have anything that plays AAC files, and the iPods play MP3, I’ll stick with that format.

It is here where MusicMatch shines. Sure the store interface pretty much sucks. Ok, maybe it’s not the most stable piece of software either (unless you are on the newest latest greatest hardware), but the quality of files it produces is outstanding! CD’s ripped to 160Kbs MP3 are crystal clear and sonicly as good as the source. When burned back to cd in CDA format, you can’t tell that they were MP3’s. Plus, MM has volume leveling that actually works, which is nice when burning discs that have songs from older CD’s and newer CD’s. And the rip speed is MUCH faster (under Windows) in MM. I can rip almost any CD at 11x , where iTunes limits me to less than 3x usually.

So, when I’m looking for the latest new release, or something else, iTunes to the rescue! But, when it comes time to listen to those tracks on a device other than my PC, gotta go back to MusicMatch.

Oh yea, y’all need to quit looking for any Kim Possible Porn, Hentai or anything else that is Kim Possible related. First of all, you won’t find anything like that here. Secondly, that’s just wrong!

new toys

I’m done spending money, I promise! You honestly think that I could just stop at the new BBQ? Of course not!

Out and about today. Decided I needed to make a stop at Crevier BMW to check out the new X3. Pretty slick little truck right there friends. I didn’t take a test drive or anything, but I did sit in it, open all of the doors and all that. It was plenty comfy for me, and I could still sit in the backseat behind me. Drop the rears seats flat and I swear a sheet of plywood would fit back there. Moving on…

About a month ago, my boss decided it was time for her to get a new computer at home. As it turns out, she went Mac (don’t worry, I tried), which left her with an unused Dell Dimension P4 1.6 with a real dodgy load of ME on it. She asked if I knew anyone that would want it, and of course I did! Not for me, but the lad was WAY over due for a new machine (his last was an old HP running a Celeron 500). She said that since it was going to be for him, my price would be FREE! Love it when that happens.

But, what was I going to do with an ME box running 128MB of RAM? Your are correct. Absolutely nothing. So, I added 512MB of RAM and XP Pro. That’s a sweet machine now!

The lad’s room is at the far end of the house, and I’m too lazy to pull CAT5 back there. So wireless it is. But, my access point (3 year old Linksys) decided to give up the ghost.

Crevier, as it happens, is right around the corner from my other technology store: MicroCenter. Neat little store, much less volume that Fry’s. If Fry’s is the Home Depot of technology, then this place is the OSH.

But they had a good deal on a new access point (which I needed). Linksys again, but this one support the 802.11g & b. I also needed external storage.

Not that the 40 GB drive in my old PIII wasn’t enough, but it wasn’t enough. I was down to less than 2GB free space, and needed something pretty quick. External Storage to the rescue! Picked up a 160GB USB2.0/firewire drive for a good price! One minor hiccup is that I am not running USB2.0 OR firewire. The device still works, but when is that last time you pushed about 38GB of data over a USB line? You could say it is time consuming, but honestly it takes longer than that.

Next up? New laptop for me and coversion of the PIII Box in a 2k/03 Server. I’ll keep ya posted.
