The iPad keyboard

Posted in Mac Stuff,Tech — by Don on 05/30/11

The following was typed on an iPad 2 at my local Apple store

Still trying to find a mobile computing solution. I have narrowed it down to apple products at least. Currently looking at either the Mac book air or the IPad. My biggest problem so far with the iPad is the onscreen keyboard. Since the air has a verY nice keyboard already, I know it wouldn’t be a problem.

I’m try ping this at the apple store on a white ipad2. And I’m not sure about the keyboard yet. So far I have accidentally hit the screen with a stray finger taking me away from the post screen 4 times.

I’m sure I could would get used to it, but a Bluetooth keyboard would help. Already I don’t like having to find parens or brackets on the on screen board.

That bit took me about 10 minutes to type. The hardest part was typing the HTML tags. Hunting for the < and > was unpleasant and for my normal use, a deal breaker. Sure I could use a bluetooth keyboard, but the whole point is to be mobile. With the iPad, at least to get any serious work done, I would have to carry 2 pieces of gear with me.

There is also the current state of development apps on the iPad. I’ve tried a couple of them and I was less than blown away. They seem to work ok, but not in the way that I work. That just about rules out the iPad for my portable computing device.

Looks like it’s time to keep an eye on the refurb shop again. Bet I can find a 13″ Macbook Pro for a smoking price there!

The Sunday Post #104: Time for a Change

Posted in Site News,The Sunday Post — by Don on 05/29/11

This one has been more than a long time coming. With Donburnside.com running a theme that I created back in 2008, it was getting a little long in tooth. So, I present to you, the fine readers of DonBurnside.com, db.com v3.0 (rev 0).

A New Layout

This is one that I have been wanting to do for quite some time, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. After I moved to Arizona, I got the opportunity to redesign the website for work and decided that this would be quite a bit like that. You know me, like to work with known good.

Which is exactly what I did!

Take a few minutes to look around. Somethings are still a little wonky, but I’ll be getting those taken care of in short order. The short list includes cleaning up the CSS, making comments look better and returning the sidebar on the blog to it’s former, kick-ass, glory. I have also updated my Portfolio if you would like to get more information about the sites that I have done.

The Red Shirt is Back!

Posted in Personal — by Don on 05/18/11
Ok, watch out.I'm wearing the red shirt today. You don't have a chance.

For those of you that might have missed this post from back in ’05.

I have about 3 red shirts actually. Everyone gets concerned or excited when I wear them because strange things usually happen. I become super creative. My thought processes become a bit more random, allowing me to come up with ideas nobody else even thought about. I get a little hyper.

It has actually been requested that on certain days for a certain meeting or function that I wear the red shirt. Or something comes up that “you’re gonna need the red shirt for that one db” gets thrown around.

I’m all about the red shirt.

Now usually, the red shirt is saved for that poor, unfortunate soul on Star Trek that dies a horrific and painful death caused by an alien laser death beam or something similiar. That’s not my case.

Used to be, the red shirt gave me power. It made me better than I was. Better. Stronger. Faster. And I think the power is back. Wearing the new red shirt today and I’m feeling a bit of a buzz.

I know it’s crazy. You can be skeptical. I know what I know.

And I know the red shirt is back.

Use What You Have

Posted in Camera Stuff,Mobile,Observations,Photos — by Don on 05/10/11
Also, cameras work way better with batteries. #facepalm

If I had a dollar (US$1.00) for every time I forgot the battery for my ‘good’ camera, I would have exactly 2 dollars (US$2.00). Really not that big of a deal, but I also did not have my old and busted and trusty Panasonic DMC-TZ3. What did I have?

My Droid Incredible.

Again, not that big of a deal, but this was for work. And the Canon takes really good photos, especially since I think I might have figured out how to actually get it to take good photos. And the photos get used to create documents that our sales staff then uses to help sell our products.

But I only had the Droid Incredible. And my only battery was a hour away and an hour back.

I kept remembering everyone that has ever told me it’s the photographer, not the camera. This week I put that to the test and, if I’m honest, everyone was right. The photos below all came directly out of my phone. Ok, maybe not directly in the strictest sense, but if directly-via-photoshop counts, then yes, directly from my phone.

Sure I could have used an app like Vignette to process them, but in my experience with this phone, the photos that it produces aren’t suitable for my needs. Photos apps on the Droid introduce a lot of noise, do weird things with color and only make a photos that fans of Instagram seem to like.

While I had the right tool for the job, I had the wrong tool. So, I made due with a little trickery. And I think they turned out pretty ok.

Time for some changes

Posted in Personal,Site News — by Don on 05/07/11

As I’m wont to do, every few years I like to change things up a bit. That means a brand new donburnside.com can’t be far behind!

Prompted mostly by new fascination with grid-based layouts, the new donburnside.com (that is already under development) will be using this. You might have seen a couple of other sites I’ve recently done using this, and I really like it.

I haven’t had the time to write of late. Which works out because I haven’t really had anything to write about. I haven’t done a video recently either but that’s more technical than anything else.

When I say I haven’t been writing, that’s not entirely true. I’ve been posting to the blog for work, I have a few posts over at dbmini that are pretty fresh plus some podcasts that are also of the newish variety. Just nothing for you guys here.

Working on changing that too. I. Have a plan.

So, the new site. I’m going to skip the rainbows and unicorn tears this time around and go more corporate I think. dark, muted colors, some flashy javascript and only the finest of my photos. I like to think I’m a pro, time to turn this site into exactly that. Stay tuned!
