The Sunday Post #92

Posted in Personal,The Sunday Post — by Don on 05/30/10

If I’m honest, I should have saved the last post for Sunday and posted some other gibberish when I got back from Denver. But alas, I did not. So, instead, I present you, the fine donburnside.com reader the following.

The Long Weekend

Coming down off of a fantastic week! I got to meet some great people, see some cool things and hang out with good friends. No way to complain about anything when things go as good as they did this past week.

A fantastic week followed by a long weekend. For most of you this would be an outstanding combination. For most of you, the long weekend means one less day in the office, 1 less daily commute, 1 less day dealing with a dickhead boss or idiot co-workers.

For me, it’s 1 less day I get to try to make money.

I’ve never been a fan of the ‘extra’ day off if I’m honest, but I’m not cut for any normal piece of cloth. I cut my teeth in the restaurant industry where we looked forward to long weekends for big numbers and lower labor. And everyone worked. Prior to that, it was the family business. Long weekend meant more ice, beer and gasoline sales, so everyone worked.

So, I always work.

But when everyone else is still in a hangover or acting like a Sunday, then I have a hard time getting stuff done that requires input from others, or interactions with others that might, potentially, give me work.

Like every other long weekend, I’m going to take the day to work on my stuff, which I seldom do. I’m going to go through all of the sites and clean things up. Go through iMovie and clean things up. Work on WRR stuff (might be big stuff toward the end of the year. Shhhh.) and prepare for the rest of the week so when Tuesday rolls around, I can hit the ground running.

Most of the work that I will be doing will be happening here and at White Roof Radio. That site is a bit of a mess and I want to make a few more changes ’round these parts to change the focus just a little bit more. Oh, and I’m probably going to redo my resume.

Of course, if there is something that you need on Monday, hit me up. I’ll be around and ready!

On Traveling

Posted in Observations,Personal — by Don on 05/28/10

So, I did a little bit of travelling this week. Not being the most seasoned at that any more, it’s always a lesson in patience, frustration and boredom, as that tweet above might allude to.

The biggest problem that I have is flying. I will be 100% honest and come clean. I don’t like to fly. That’s not entirely correct. Flying is ok, it’s the taking off and, sometimes, landing that I’m less than a fan of. Especially if there is weather.

Which I encountered on all three legs of my journey this week. Rough air sucks. As do delays caused by threats of thunderstorms and tornados in Denver. I’m only too happy to chill and wait for that crap to pass, but some kind of heads up would be nice (I’m sure there is an app for that. Shut up.).

The delays were compounded by a delay mid flight as well. Flying into DIA, I have a feeling that there were over 20 flights equally delayed and stacked in patterns above the airport. My guess is when this happens they bust out the XBox 360 team, pump them full of Red Bull and tell them to put all of the planes on the ground. At the same time.

Not a problem unless you are trying to get a back from the carousel onto which bags from said 20 other flights are currently off loading. Or, overwhelming the poor fellas at the rental car desk that were trying to figure out why 30 people just walked in at 11:30 at night.

Overall the experience was ok. Just the delays drive me batty. Go check out the photos from MINI of Loveland now.

I can fix it

Posted in Personal — by Don on 05/21/10

I’ve been a mending machine lately. The odd part is that I have always considered myself to very much less than technical. Shows what I know.

So far this year (that I remember), I have:

  • Replaced the fuel pump in my MINI
  • Helped install a new kitchen stove
  • Replaced the Belt on my dryer
  • Changed the spark plugs in the MINI
  • Replaced the entire bezel assembly on Mom’s HP Laptop
  • A few more things that aren’t coming to me right now

Like I said, I don’t consider myself very handy. I mean, I can do many things, but I always had a problem with the level of patience required for some jobs. If it exceeded what I thought I was comfortable, then I shipped it offshore to let people that do it every day take care of it.

Maybe it’s age. Maybe it’s that I don’t have the money to pay for repairs. Maybe it’s the level of satisfaction one gets after completely such tasks. Whatever it is, I kinda like it.

The iPad

twitter screen shot

So, I had the chance to fondle an iPad this past weekend for a few minutes at the local Apple store. Sure, it was cool. Sure, it was pretty neat. Sure, it struck me as an iPod touch with a microphone and larger screen.

I wasn’t that impressed.

First up, I was amazed at how heavy it was. I now understand when people say they can only read about a chapter before having to set it down. I also found the keyboard awkward to use with more than my two index fingers. The rest, iPod touch. With iWork.

Revolutionary? I don’t think so. Game changing? Not for me. Cool? Yes. Buy it? No.

There currently is not a handy slot for the device to fit into my everyday life. Hell, I don’t think I have a place for this as a weekly use device either. It’s not a laptop, so you can’t really use it to store anything. You can’t get anything on to it unless it goes through iTunes. And I don’t use iTunes for my media except for playback. I don’t buy music, don’t buy or rent movies either. Sure, Handbrake does the conversions on video files, but do I really want to go back and redo 10 seasons of Top Gear or 7 seasons of The West Wing to ensure they play on the device? Not really. And don’t even get me started on having to pay for Hulu for this.

Then there is the keyboard. I would have to carry an external keyboard with me all the time with this device. The onscreen board felt like it would be good for about 3, maybe 4 sentances before I would be extremely over it.

All in all good things, since I don’t have 5 bills to drop on a piece of tech right now that wouldn’t immediately improve my productivity, connectivity or somethingsomethingity. Sure it’s cool, but it’s not cool enough for me. At least it’s not right now.

The Sunday Post #91

Posted in The Sunday Post — by Don on 05/16/10

Wanting to write this morning, but not having an idea what to write about is always a good way to start one of these. Let’s see what happens.

I got nothin’

I’m not sure about the rest of you, but I had a horrible week. I think your moon was in my 12th house of kitty cats or something because it was rough. I was lacking in motivation, lacking in sleep and lacking in any substantial paid work. Definitely a 1-2 punch that needed more fake sweetener.

So I’m back to sending my resume out. It’s not that I ever left that particular task, but instead of sending it out 3 times a week to network/tech jobs, I’ve changed my tact. No, that’s not right, because that would make you think I was applying for jobs as a trash collector or monkey trainer. That’s not it as all. Instead, lets say I’m broadening the area where I send my resume.

Besides tech, why not some marketing? I mean, right? I always forget that…

  • In the restaurant biz, I was the bar calendar guy with my Microsoft Publisher ’97 and free clipart.
  • Also in the restaurant biz, I was the guy calling the corporate marketing department to beg them to please, for all that was good and rainbows, stop sending coupons to the retirement community that shared our zip code.
  • Skipping ahead a few years, I was ‘that’ guy sending out bulk faxes for tape drive repair. Faxes that I designed. I think I managed about a 2% call rate on those.
  • Skipping even further ahead, I was responsible to sales increases of 10% or more during my tenure with the car wash company. Not to mention I was also responsible for gift card sales of about $50k in the first year.
  • Since 2005, I have been the chief promoter and 1 man marketing dept. for White Roof Radio. My efforts combined with the fact that those boys give me something good to promote do one helluva show, has resulted in a listener base of over 3k

So, I ask again, why not?

I mean, as long as I don’t have do anything douche-y like PR (I just got goosebumps, and not the good kind) or send out email newsletters 14 times a week, right? My only issue with those kinds of things is the ridiculous terminolgy that comes with it. Terms like reach out, synergy and [insert lame term here] are just too much. I’m sure I would giggle if I had to use any of them too much.

Back to the boards. Let’s see what happens!
