New Years Challenge Update, II

Posted in Family,Tech — by Don on 05/30/08

Back in January, I issued a challenge to myself and all of the readers of w(t)f. My big one this year was to get Mom to use Flickr.

Mine will be getting Mom to use Flickr. She just bought my camera (her first Amazon.com purchase) and she really digs seeing my shots on the webernets. And she is a bit of a tech junkie. So Flickr is a perfect fit. Keeping in mind that I couldn’t get her to switch, I think I’ll be able to pull this one off no sweat.

The other night I’m sitting around with teh Lad watching Transformers again and my phone rings. It’s Mom. She’s trying to figure out how to setup an account at Yahoo! so she can use Flickr! Of course I helped her and about 1/2 hour later I had an email from her Flickr account saying she had pictures for me to view. Of course, I couldn’t see them since she had them marked Friends and Family and didn’t add me as a contact. I called her back and got that part sorted out and voila!

Mom is using Flickr. Sweet!

Time to come up with another challenge. Maybe a switch from AOL to Gmail?

Safari Users: Watch where you click

Posted in Mac Stuff,Tech,Windows Stuff — by Don on 05/30/08

In case you missed this over at TUAW this morning.

A zero-day vulnerability in Safari that could litter a user’s desktop (or downloads folder) with arbitrary files is a serious security flaw, argues ZDNet, and not a mere “annoyance” as Apple claims.

In theory, a user must click a link to visit a malicious website that can begin downloading arbitrary files (including applications) to the user’s computer without their permission. The problem affects both the Windows and Mac versions of Safari.

If you are using Safari (Mac or Windows), just be careful where you click. And be sure to pass this along to your other Safari using friends that you know don’t read any of ‘the blogs’.

Download Firefox 3

Posted in Tech — by Don on 05/29/08

Well, not right now. They are trying to get into the Guiness Book of World Records by setting the record for the most software downloads in 24 hours. From Spreadfirefox.com.

Sounds like a good deal, right? All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours – it’s that easy. We’re not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.

Before the day (which isn’t posted yet), they are looking for users to ‘pledge’ a download, which requires your email address so they can notify you when Firefox 3 is ready to go.

Being a Firefox user since the aught-point-seven days (called Phoenix if memory serves), I went ahead and signed up. Nice to know I’ll be, a very small part of, a Guiness Record.

Don’t Look for Excuses

Posted in Mac Stuff,Observations,Rants,Tech, technology — by Don on 05/28/08

I’m mentioning this because it has come up twice in the last week and change. Talking about Macs.

First recommendation

I forgot how the subject even came up, but I, of course, recommended getting a Mac. His first words were “Do they have a tablet?”.

I said no.

I then asked if he needed one or knew someone that did.

He said No.

I then said www.dell.com. It’s obvious he really doesn’t want a Mac.

2nd recommendation

Again, not sure how it came up. But I spent a lot of time answering questions and clarifying things. Way too much fight in these people. I ended up getting this guy sorted out and he thinks a Mac might be in his future.

I’m not going to be doing this anymore. If you have questions pertaining to switching, I will gladly answer them. But, if you ask what kind of laptop to buy, don’t get all pissy and defensive when my first choice is a Mac. If you don’t want a Mac, then get a Dell or Lenovo and leave me alone about it. And, don’t keep asking me questions so you can further convince yourself you don’t want/need a Mac. It only makes you look stupid.

All those Mac vs. PC commercials are fairly true. Unless you are a hardcore gamer, have to run a network with a domain and Active Directory or you just can’t live without Outlook, there is no reason why you shouldn’t give serious consideration to the Mac for your next purchase.

Just stop looking for excuses. If you are, then don’t ask for my opinion.

(To rub it in, I used Safari to post this. So there)

Does anyone know?

Posted in Observations,Rants — by Don on 05/27/08

Part of my day to day is checking out quite a few different automotive sites and automotive related news. Included in that, usually, is talk about the price of gas.

Then the comments start. And, might I say what an uninformed bunch we are. I mean really.

Is there any one among us that knows why the price of gas is high? We can speculate it’s the oil companies gouging us, but then they say their profit percentages are in line with other companies. Ok, I’ll buy that.

We can blame the war in Iraq or instability there, in Brazil or anyplace else. But is that really why?

Oh, I know, it’s got to be a supply/demand problem and all of those damned SUV’s and Bugatti’s running around, right? I’m pretty sure this isn’t why either.

Blame Bush? Sure, you could jump on that band wagon too. But, with only a few month left in office, is that terribly productive?

Maybe it’s the weak Dollar? Since oil is traded in Dollars, and since the Dollar is tanking pretty much everywhere now (even in Canada? Are you kidding me?), that sounds pretty reasonable.

Or, perhaps it’s a combination of all or some of these events. Working in concert to single handily screw the United States and just about every other major oil consumer on the planet. Maybe?

I can tell you that I do not know. And, the more I read, the less I know. It’s a confusing mess with the spin doctors definitely earning their keep by blaming the other guy. It’s crazy.

It’s also why I’ve never actually said why I think they are high. I don’t have enough information to accurately say one way or another. It’s also why I wish other people would stop.

So quick to blame Bush, the oil companies, or the war. So quick to YELL AND SCREAM at SUV owners. It’s nothing more than FUD and I think it’s time it’s stopped.

Unless, of course, someone can tell me exactly why oil prices are high, without a doubt. And, when you are done telling me, perhaps you should make the rounds on the morning shows too, get everyone else sorted out as well. Sure would be appreciated.

Thank you.
