There is a first time for everything…
And today for me, it was to actually touch a modern Mac. Fairly nice G3 Powerbook too. But, as I’m told, it has a wonky power supply and hasn’t been working well of late. So, being the computer guy, it was brought to me to at least get the needed documents off of it. What a lesson in frustration this turned out to be.
WARNING: If you are a Mac fancier, stop reading here and move along. What you are about to read will probably piss you off and generate a ton of hate mail. I’m ok with this.
So, I power on the machine. After a few minutes it comes up to what I presume is the main Mac desktop. Ok
Now comes the part where I have to find the files. With a little help from a more Mac knowledgeable friend, mission accomplished.
Now for the fun part. How do I get them off of the machine?
Well, I had a Zip drive. I plugged it in and something popped up on the screen, but the disk format was wrong. It asks me to format, so I comply. But the process, after 15 minutes, did not complete. So I spend the next 5 minutes trying to find how to reboot the thing.
So, it comes back up. I think I’ll just use a web client to email them to me. So I plug in the network cable and it connects to Yahoo Mail. But it was 30+ documents, so this wasn’t the best idea. I see IE is installed, so I think I’ll just FTP them to my server and be done with it. Well, as it turns out, IE on the Mac won’t upload files via FTP. Great. I’ll archive the files and email them, but I find out that if I can find a zip utility, I can only archive 1 file at a time. What?
Oh yea, sometime during my adventure I managed to copy all of the files from where ever they were stored to what looks like a talk bar. Odd, but whatever.
I did finally manage to get the files uploaded, but here’s my point really. I found the Mac interface (OSX if you must know) to be less than intuative and actually quite confusing. I couldn’t find any of the programs that were installed besides what were on the task bar thingy. I never found access to all of the drives on the computer, couldn’t figure out if they cdrom drive was a burner, and where the burning program was. Also, no right click? Well, there is but it requires a keyboard press at the same time.
I was actually accused of being brainwashed earlier because I could not figure this out. Now you Mac folks go easy on me here, as I have not worked on any apple product since my old IIE back in high school.
Anyway, I had better luck with win3.1 back in the day. Thanks, but I’ll stick with my lame ass, slow, cumbersome and unreliable windows PC.

So I’ve been pretty busy and have had the weirdest of weeks.
Still trying to make this whole single-dad thing work. So far, I’d give myself a C+.
Part of that is not doing anything really huge for the lads birthday. I’m making it up this weekend, but still.
Grandma Mac turned 95 last sunday. Short as ever, sharp as a tack and still drives! Well, ok, not like she is taking big road trips or anything. She won’t drive on the freeway or at night. Or when she isn’t feeling up to it. Only to church and the ‘Y’, maybe to the beauty shop too, but that’s it.
So, for the 95 birthday, a big party insued. Almost the entire family was there. The only ones that didn’t make it were the ones that either had something else to attend and couldn’t get out of it, or the ones that were too chickensh*t to actually make the trip out. C’mon folks, anyone of you have a relative that is 95? Or do you get the opportunity to stand in a room that contains 5 generations of your family?
I was also elected to the position of President for the Car Club. Yea, I don’t know what I was thinking either.
And, for those of you that are east of the Mississippi, try listening to the John & Ken Show on KFI 640 AM sometime (3P-7P PST). According to these guys, 100% of the worlds problems right now can be traced back to illegal Mexican immigrants. Traffic in SoCal? Yep. Hospital Closures? Yep. Grocery Workers Strike? No, those union guys are idiots, but give them another few months. Anyway, it’s been on their rant table for the last week or so, check ‘em out. Oh yea, if you are even slightly more Democratic than me, watch out, because they will piss you off.
Finally, I have come to the conclusion that I am done with the car wash. Not that I mind getting paid to work on Club stuff in the office, it’s just that I’m bored. Made a visit to my old shop last week and they are doing really cool stuff with embedded XP and new POS terminals that are running off of a memory stick, and I’m still working in Win98/NT. Ugh. They don’t prepare for rain. They won’t spend money on Technology, and we aren’t growing.

travel times and fixed costs
Had a meeting in Anaheim yesterday afternoon. The meeting ended too late for me to go back to the office, so I headed home.
Since I work primarily in Costa Mesa, I normally drive Hwy. 73 to Interstate 5 to Hwy 74 (Ortega Hwy) to get home. Total miles is about 55, total travel time is usually about an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half.
But, like I said, I was in Anaheim. So I decided to take the 91. Wow. What a huge mistake that was.
Normally from Anaheim to Lake Elsinore, even through the canyon and Corona, I can get home in about the same time as it takes from Costa Mesa, eventhough it’s about 10 miles shorter. But not last night.
Last night it took a hour fifteen to get through Corona. And then there was an accident on the southbound 15, so it took me another 45 minutes from Corona to get home! Mind you, this section of the journey is right at about 22 miles.
After that ordeal, I decided to do the math and see just how much time I waste in the MINI on a monthly basis, based on normal travel times. Anyone in class care to take a guess?
60 hours per month.
Yea, almost 2 full work weeks are lost driving everyone month. Ugh.
So, I went ahead and figured out what it actually costs me to work. This is going to be staggering.
40% of my normal billing is spoken for before I get it. 40%!
Those are fixed costs. Costs that I must absorb to actually get to work everyday. To communicate. To support.
That doesn’t count my household overhead (food, clothes, utilities, hookers), just what it takes for me to work. Total dollars are right about $1500 per month.
I think I need to find work in the IE (yea, a technology job in the 909, uh huh) or increase my billable rate to the point where my fixed costs are at about 25%.
Maybe the lotto ticket I got for tonight might hit. Maybe…..
Uncy db and the chalice of jelly beans
Yea, in exchange for the occasional watching of the lad, I give my sis and brother-in-law the night off and hold a sleep over with the girls.
Today was my day.
First, we started off at the R/C track again, watching bro race his 10 scale nitro powered dirt truck. Well, he didn’t really race. He’s just a beginner you see. He has all the latest, trickest gear and parts, but he has a really hard time keeping the damn thing on it’s wheels. He leaves the line, he flips. He hits a jump, lands on the rear wheels and does carthwheels down the track. Takes the corners? Yea, then too. He had to upgrade to all the latest, greatest and trickest stuff because, as it turns out, it is all way less break proof than the stock stuff. And with how much time he spends crashing, he needs all the help he can get!
After that, nothing but the finest Chinese food the 909 has to offer. Oh no, no alley cats and k-rats here. Only the best for my crew!
Finish that off with the last Looney Tunes movie (remarkably I enjoyed it) and some heaping bowls of chocolate chip ice cream, I’d say the night was a success. Well, an “unky db” success anyway.
And, for the morning meal? fresh hot cinamon rolls and icy cold milk. Breakfast of champions right there. So what if my champions are a little too young to be a wheaties box. The like cinnamon rolls dammit!
Drama with the club is finally subsiding, which is nice.
First super duper rough draft of new website project is completed. I might have a network to setup here pretty soon, if my cards are correctly played and the money gods decide to smile upon that day.
Yea, websites and network config. I’m a handy IT guy to have around. I can even build you a custom PC if you like. What, you need 100 custom PC’s in 3 days? Sure, I can do that too (well, as long as I have the parts anyway). Need a server? Business cars, letterhead and a flyer for the pennysaver? Sure, why not. Oven roasted, pan seared Filet Mignon with roasted red pepper cream sauce? Yep? Catch those windows for you too while I’m at it?
Fixin’ to take the MINI out for more track time at the end of the month, so I’m quite excited about that. Got the last of the upgraded brake parts and a replacement rear anti-sway bar too. Yea, I’ll install those too.
